Buckets

The Bucket:  17-pound weight limit

With the exception of the bedroll all clothing
and equipment need to fit in the bucket!

Everyone will receive from their wards, a 5-gallon bucket with a lid to pack their supplies in. The 5-gallon bucket's size and shape are suited for even distribution in the handcart. The 17 lb weight limit not only reflects what the handcart saints were allowed to carry but helps to keep the handcart weight to a minimum. These buckets will also serve as camp chairs on the Trek. We suggest that each lid be covered with some padding, as the lid has a significant lip that would be uncomfortable to sit on for any length of time.

Please remember these guidelines when making the padded lids for the buckets:

  • The maximum bucket weight, including personal items, the lid & padding must not exceed 17 lbs.
  • The buckets must be able to stack one on top of another. If the padding is not removable, please make sure it fits in the underside of another bucket that could sit securely on top.
  • If securing the padding to the lid, please make sure it won't come off!

Shown above are two examples of bucket seat covers. They both are removable. The bucket on the left is attached with wing nuts on the backside of the lid and can easily be removed and stored inside the bucket for stacking/transporting. The one on the right has elastic around the edge and can also be removed and stored inside. Remember, the seat covers are optional and don't need to be elaborate.  Buckets and lids are usually sold separately.

Wards may have a bucket decorating activity.  Below are couple examples of simple decorating ideas.

Behold, I say unto you, it is not an act of rebellion to writeth thy name on a bucket with a Sharpie and be done.
